It’s that time of year again!  I. Love. Sharks.  I have loved them since I was a little kid.  I don’t really remember the first time I saw a nature special on sharks, but I was completely hooked.  I have been obsessed with Shark Week ever since.  This is my favorite week of the year, and I look forward to it all year long!  Even the years we didn’t have cable tv, I bought the Shark Week Blu-ray set and just watched those, and whatever was available on Netflix.  It’s like my Super Bowl, All-Star Weekend, and World Series all rolled into one.

All he wants is a hug!
All he wants is a hug!

This year, I have been waiting patiently (or not) for another awesome week of sharks.  As soon as they were available, I set them ALL up on my DVR to record.  And I don’t mean just the new shows for 2013.  All of the shows.

So, on Sunday, I started watching past programs as soon as I woke up.  And all day long (with a break for a nap and a dinner out with friends).  So, I was a little behind when I finally got to the first new show – Megalodon!  Megalodon has to be the coolest of the extinct sharks.  Ten times the size of a Great White?  Holy crap.  Nowhere to hide.  I was really excited to see what kind of new information they had dug up.

Now the honest truth is that humans have barely scratched the surface when it comes to exploring the oceans.  We just don’t have the ability yet.  So who knows what is out there.  We find brand new species all the time that we never knew existed, along with a few that we thought had died out, but really didn’t.  So you never know!  Discovery Channel has provided quality educational programs for decades, so I am always excited to see what they came up with yet.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

I started watching this show, Megalodon, and immediately thought something wasn’t right.  It didn’t have the right “feel”.  Something in the way it was shot just didn’t make it look or feel real.  So, like any good nerd, I immediately Googled the show to see if anything was out there about the show being fake, or what.  I was immediately assaulted with mass internet anger over this farce.  The fact that this channel has the balls to make this crappy mockumentary and try to make people think it was real is insulting.  I started to get really angry.  How dare they?  And during Shark Week!  Ruining the sanctity of this our favorite week.

Here’s the deal – If they wanted to make a shitty sci-fi film shot in a documentary style, be my guest.  But fucking tell us it’s crap upfront.  And don’t play it during a week that is meant to be about education and conservation.  It’s playing into sensationalism and commercialism, and I think it really sucks.  Now, I hear people questioning the legitimacy of their other shows throughout the years, and I think that is a crying shame.  I believe that through the years this channel has done a lot to bring awareness to the plight of the sharks.  Because the truth of the matter is that sharks only kill a handful of people world-wide every year, while we humans are killing them by the millions.  To the point where it is almost impossible for them to recover, being a very slow-breeding and maturing animal.  It’s a shame and will vastly impact the health of the oceans.

I am still watching my sharks this week, but, I am very gun-shy of their new programming.  I think that Discovery really needs to think twice about this stupid move and figure out a way to make up for it.  And this isn’t the first time they have pretended a fictional show was an actual documentary (See Mermaids from a few months ago).  Attempting to deceive your audience (a very loyal audience, I might add) is a chicken shit move.

Get your act together, jerks.  Don’t ruin Shark Week.
